One project has stayed with me for years.
Back when we still held our builder’s licence, we were called to a property in Sinnamon Park after a severe storm caused an existing sandstone boulder retaining wall to collapse into the backyard.

Above it sat a concrete pool surround and a large swimming pool. Once the wall failed, sections of the pool area became undermined and exposed.

After all, it had stood there for years.
My response was simple.
“Until it didn’t.”
If someone had been standing in that backyard when the wall collapsed, there’s every chance they wouldn’t have survived.
Replacing the retaining wall wasn’t actually the biggest challenge.

We only had around 1.6 metres between the neighbouring fence, roof eaves and downpipes.
Removing the existing sandstone boulders seemed almost impossible.
Initially, we explored using cranes. However, the battle axe shaped block meant no crane had enough reach.
Next, we priced hydraulic rock breakers to smash every sandstone boulder into manageable pieces.
At one stage, and I’m not joking, someone even suggested using a helicopter.
Eventually, we stood on site with the client, engineer and project manager searching for another solution.
A Smarter Solution Changed Everything
Instead of asking how we could remove the old wall, I asked a different question.
“What if we stopped trying to remove it?”
That single question changed the direction of the entire project.
Rather than excavating every sandstone boulder, we poured a fully engineered footing, buried the failed sandstone wall behind the new structure to stabilise the undermined area, and then constructed a reinforced besser block retaining wall in front of it.
Once the wall was rendered and painted, you would never know the original retaining wall was still there.
After reviewing the concept, the engineer smiled and said,
“Yep, that’s the move.”
The solution eliminated the access problem, delivered a significantly stronger retaining wall and saved the homeowner close to $100,000.
Ultimately, the four metre retaining wall wasn’t the hardest part of the project.
Finding a smarter way to build it was.
