Start With the Life You Want Around the Pool

Before talking about exposed aggregate, honed concrete or coping, we want to understand what you’re actually trying to create.

For one family, the priority might be a robust, low-maintenance pool area where the kids can run around all summer.

For another, it might be a quiet architectural retreat connected to the master bedroom.

Another might want the pool to become the centre of an outdoor entertaining area with an outdoor kitchen, dining space, firepit and enough room for twenty people on Christmas Day.

Those are three very different pool surrounds.

The questions we ask might include:

How will your family actually use the space?
Where will you entertain?
Do you want open space or smaller defined zones?
Where will furniture naturally sit?
How do people move from the house to the pool?
Do we need to allow for shade?
Would planting help soften larger areas of concrete?
Is there an outdoor shower?

Sometimes the best outcome isn’t more concrete.

It might be changing a pathway, creating a small seating area, introducing steppers and planting, widening one section of the surround or spending more on the finish where it will have the greatest visual impact.

This is where landscape design thinking becomes incredibly valuable.

For more involved projects, we can also collaborate with landscape designers and other specialists where a broader design response is required.

The objective isn’t to sell you the most concrete. It’s to make the available space work incredibly well.

Choosing the Right Concrete Pool Surround

There isn’t one “best” pool surround.

There is a finish that best suits your home, your lifestyle, your budget and the way you want the area to feel.

Exposed Aggregate

For many homes, exposed aggregate is our first conversation.

It provides natural texture, performs well outdoors and gives us an enormous palette of stones, cement colours and aggregate combinations to work with.

It can feel relaxed and coastal, dark and contemporary, warm and natural or crisp and architectural depending on the mix selected.

Honed Concrete

If the brief moves further toward resort-style or architectural, honed concrete can completely change the character of the space.

Grinding exposes the stone within the concrete and creates a more refined surface.

Around pools, however, the finish needs to balance appearance with practical wet-area performance. The level of honing, sealing system and required grip all need to be considered together.

Coloured and Textured Concrete

Sometimes the concrete shouldn’t be the hero.

A restrained coloured or textured finish can work beautifully when the pool, landscaping, architecture or another material needs to take visual priority.

New Concrete Around an Existing Pool

You don’t necessarily need a new swimming pool to completely transform the area around it.

Existing surrounds can be removed and rebuilt, giving us an opportunity to reconsider levels, drainage, coping, pathways, entertaining areas and the relationship between the pool and the rest of the backyard.

For older properties especially, this can make the pool feel like an entirely different part of the home.

Sometimes Separation Is the Better Detail

There is a tendency in outdoor design to assume that fewer visible joints automatically means a more premium result.

We don't necessarily agree.

A beautifully selected coping material paired with a complementary concrete surround can create an incredibly refined architectural outcome.

More importantly, it allows the pool and surrounding concrete to remain separate structures.

That's generally our preferred approach.

The coping can deliberately frame the water while the surrounding concrete connects the pool back into the architecture and landscape.

The contrast can actually become part of the design.

Stone against exposed aggregate.

A lighter coping against a deeper concrete blend.

A subtle tonal transition between the pool edge and honed surround.

Rather than trying to hide how the area has been constructed, we can use those transitions intentionally.

Practical doesn't have to mean ordinary.

What About a Seamless Concrete Pool Edge?

There are projects where the architectural brief calls for something different.

A seamless concrete pool edge can create an incredible monolithic appearance, with the concrete visually continuing toward the water without traditional coping interrupting the surface.

We understand why people love it.

We do too.

But we also treat it seriously.

Earlier in Conker's journey, we installed seamless pool edge systems using the accepted installation methodology at the time.

As those projects aged, we became increasingly uncomfortable with the idea of connecting substantial surrounding concrete to a pool structure without properly considering whether that pool had been designed to accept the additional loads and movement.

So we stopped offering them.

We rectified what needed to be rectified and spent time reconsidering the construction methodology before deciding whether it was something we wanted to offer again.

Today, we are prepared to explore seamless pool edges where the architecture genuinely warrants it — but not as a standard detail applied blindly to every swimming pool.

The pool builder and relevant engineer need to be part of that conversation, particularly where the proposed construction changes the loads being transferred into the pool structure.

We then work with specialist delivery partners for the construction, grinding, honing and sealing required to achieve the finished result.

Sometimes a seamless edge will be the right answer.

Sometimes we'll recommend beautifully detailed coping instead.

We'd rather give you the right answer than the sexiest one.

Think Beyond the Waterline

The best pool areas don’t feel like a swimming pool with some concrete around it.

They feel like part of the home.

That might mean creating a generous entertaining area between the kitchen and pool.

A pathway disappearing through planting toward an outdoor shower.

Steppers breaking up a large expanse of hardscape.

A small pad positioned specifically for two sun lounges.

ROWES BAY
Resurfaced Double Driveway, Garage & Pathways

Our clients recently completed a major home renovation in the upscale neighborhood of Rowes Bay in Brisbane. After the renovation, they contacted us to enhance the plain grey concrete surfaces on their property. We performed a full concrete resurfacing of the double driveway, internal garage, and pathways using Dulux Avista French Grey with charcoal and white flecks. The project was completed with two coats of Dulux Avista Extended Wear clear sealer.

As with this project, some clients choose to continue resurfacing into their internal garage instead of traditional epoxy flake flooring, which is prone to hot tire pick up in Queensland. Resurfacing the garage floor provides a continuous, seamless look without the need for additional building finishes

Is concrete around a pool a good idea?

Yes. Concrete pool surrounds are strong, low-maintenance and can be finished in a way that is both beautiful and safe. When designed properly, they manage drainage, protect the pool shell and tie your whole outdoor area together. They are also typically more cost-effective than many tiled finishes.

What is the best concrete finish around a pool?

There is no single “best” finish. Exposed aggregate, honed concrete and textured resurfacing can all work well when designed for slip resistance, comfort underfoot and the look you want. We will suggest options that suit your pool type, climate and lifestyle.

How much do concrete pool surrounds cost?

Pool surrounds involve more detailing, drainage and coordination than standard slabs. As a rough guide, most Conker pool surround projects sit in the five-figure range, with many similar in value to our driveway work once size and finishes are considered.

Will chlorine, salt or magnesium damage concrete pool surrounds?

Poorly detailed concrete can suffer from chemicals and salt over time. We design and seal pool surrounds with this in mind, using systems that are suited to salt, chlorine and magnesium pools and keeping joints and falls working as they should.

Are concrete pool surrounds slippery?

They don’t have to be. We design all pool surrounds to meet the AS 4586 slip resistance standards, targeting P4 or P5 wet barefoot ratings so the area feels safe and comfortable even when the kids are running around.

Should pool surrounds be tied to the pool shell or kept separate?

In most cases, surrounds are better designed as independent structures, allowing the pool shell and surrounding ground to move at different rates without cracking or damage. We only offer details that we know will stand up over time.
