 How We Build Floating Concrete Stairs

1. Floating Concrete Stairs Construction Starts With An Idea And A Conversation

Most projects begin the same way. You send a photo, an inspiration image or ask how floating stairs might work on your block. From there we ask the right questions.

  • Where are the stairs going?
  • What height are we working across?
  • What look are you chasing?
  • Are you wanting a feature or something more understated?

Once we understand the direction, we give you a guide price based on similar work we have delivered.
If that feels comfortable, we book an onsite consultation to sketch out the design properly.

2. Onsite We Shape The Floating Concrete Stairs Around The Space

Floating stairs cannot be designed in isolation. The surrounding area, landscaping, access and natural movement of the space all influence the result.

Onsite we look at:

  • starting and finishing points
  • natural flow of people through the area
  • how each tread will sit in the landscape
  • drainage and fall to ensure water moves away cleanly
  • available access for materials and equipment

3. Proposal, Budget And Confirmation For Floating Stairs

We take your site notes, measurements and the agreed design intent and turn it into a clean, easy to read proposal.

It outlines:

  • number of stairs
  • your chosen finish
  • expected timeline
  • the project investment

We call you to walk through the proposal and answer any questions. If you are happy to move forward, you pay a small deposit to secure your place in our schedule. Only then do we move into detailed design.

4. Detailed Drawings And Pre Construction Planning For Floating Concrete Stairs

Floating stairs look simple once they are finished, but the structure behind them is precise.

Our drawings confirm:

  • exact riser heights
  • tread depths
  • landing points
  • how each stair locks into the next
  • reinforcement requirements
  • full compliance with building standards

Nothing is guessed. Every measurement is drawn, checked and documented. Once drawings are approved, the project is handed to our delivery team and scheduled.

5. How We Actually Build The Floating Concrete Stairs Effect

(The Part Most People Do Not Realise)

Here is the part people find most interesting. Floating stairs are not poured all at once.
If you try to form and pour every tread in a single run, the weight of the concrete, vibration during placement, and the pressure on the forms will cause movement, blowouts and inconsistencies.

We have trialed single pours in the past to make things cheaper for clients, but the quality never meets our standards.
The correct method is the alternate pour system. We build the stairs in two stages.

Stage One: Form And Pour Every Second Floating Stair

We form up treads 1, 3, 5 and 7 as an example. These are fully caged with steel, braced and poured.

Limiting the number of treads in each pour gives:

  • stronger, safer formwork
  • cleaner, more consistent shapes
  • better control during vibration and finishing
  • no forcing concrete into tight corners
  • perfect precision on visible edges

These stairs are allowed to cure properly. Once cured, they become strong anchor points for the remaining stairs.

Stage Two: Form And Pour The Remaining Floating Stairs

With the first set cured, we return and form up the stairs in between.

These new treads:

  • span cleanly between the cured ones
  • sit with shadow gaps either side
  • create the floating effect
  • finish perfectly because they do not fight against wet adjacent concrete

We tie reinforcement correctly between each pour so the structure is unified but visually separated. This alternate pour system is the reason Conker stairs look crisp, balanced and architecturally deliberate.

6. Finishing, Refining And Revealing The Floating Stairs Shape

After the second pour, the formwork is removed and the full staircase is revealed.

We then:

  • check every riser for consistency
  • smooth edges and refine lines
  • grind out any imperfections
  • clean surrounding surfaces
  • prepare the stairs for sealing

This stage is where the floating concrete stairs design really shows itself. The floating look becomes obvious and the structure starts to feel like it belongs to the space.

7. Sealing And Long Term Protection For Floating Concrete Stairs

Once the concrete has cured properly, we return to seal the stairs.

The sealer:

  • protects against stains and weather
  • enhances colour and texture
  • improves longevity
  • maintains slip resistance

We give you clear care instructions so the stairs stay looking sharp for years.

8. Final Walkthrough And Aftercare For Your Floating Concrete Stairs

When the job is complete, we meet you onsite for a walkthrough.

We explain:

  • how the stairs were built
  • what we have done to protect them
  • what to expect as the concrete continues to cure
  • how to clean and maintain the finish
