What Actually Goes Into Coloured Concrete?
In theory, coloured concrete is a standard mix with iron oxide pigment added in. The colour runs through the entire slab — not just the surface — which means no peeling or flaking like paint.
But modern concrete is no longer “just concrete.”
It’s now filled with additives: plasticisers, retarders, water reducers, accelerators. These interact with the oxide in unpredictable ways. Add in heat, wind, shade, humidity, and travel time from the batch plant, and you’ve got a slab that can go wrong fast if the applicator doesn’t know what they’re doing.
The Risks Most Contractors Won’t Talk About
Here’s what we’ve seen (and been asked to fix) far too often:
- Uneven curing that causes dark patches or surface burns
- Shadowing or streaking from inconsistent oxide dispersion

Coloured concrete can work well — but only under the right conditions, with the right mix, applied by a crew that understands how all the variables interact. Even then, it requires sealing every 18 to 24 months if you want to retain the colour.
Our stance is simple:
- We don’t recommend it as the default.
- We prefer safer, more reliable options that deliver the same visual impact without the long-term risk.
What We Recommend Instead
Option 1: Exposed Aggregate
A timeless, non-slip, textured finish that doesn’t rely on pigment. It holds up beautifully in Queensland’s sun and rain and rarely dates.
Option 2: Plain Concrete + Resurfacing
We pour a standard high-strength concrete slab, then apply a designer resurfacing finish over the top. This gives you full control of the colour, texture, and detail — and the ability to refresh or change it later without demolition.
Both options give you:

- Flexibility in design
- Easier repairs if needed down the track
